A guided tour of the house plus high tea was gifted to me for my birthday.
Our guide, Elaine, was most informative, showing us photos and adding details along the way, which enriched our visit. and we were allowed to explore independently.
Our afternoon tea was delicious, and allergies had been noted on booking and catered for. There was far too much to eat, and so it was boxed up for us to enjoy later at home.
The gift shop has a wonderful selection of gifts suitable for all budgets.
All staff were very pleasant and helpful.
A lovely day, long anticipated and worth the wait. Thank you all.

If you want to experience something totally different in the Midlands then you have to visit 78 Derngate. The perfectionism of the house owner, Basset-Lowke, over the individual style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who took inspiration from Art Nouveau and Japanese styles, produced a unique ‘modern’ living environment in 1916, which has been preserved and restored for future generations.

Absolute hidden gem in Northampton. The only home Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed in England. The Art Deco walls, lighting, furniture, rooms simply amaze you. As a Glaswegian I know his work well, buildings and art so I was fascinated to discover Derngate. Volunteers give a wonderful informative tour. You must book. Then you can wander afterwards at your leisure. Upstairs is the museum about the owner and drawings of the house plans etc The cafe is reasonable too, tasty home baking, aft teas and breakfasts. Parking is nearby alongside the park. If I remember the house is part of National Trust.
All in all a fabulous day out!!

Amazing, I’ve wanted to come here for years as I’ve known about Macintosh since I was in the furniture trade from a teenager . Obviously a lot of the original furniture and fittings are copied from the originals as the house has had several lives from the original design by macintosh, but so extremely well done it is hard to tell unless you are an expert in this field .

When you purchase your ticket it is also valid for a year which is a bonus if you wanted to take other friends or family back .

I would certainly reccomend this visit as it really is like going back in time to the Arts and Crafts Era

When I found out Charles Rennie Mackintosh had designed the interior of a house in England, I made it my mission to visit. What a fantastic find. A grade 2 listed Georgian house with stunning Mackintosh interior/architecture. £9 for an adult ticket, which included a guided tour…this took about an hour. A special thanks to Elaine, who showed us around and gave a detailed insight into the history of the property and its occupants. The Dining Room restaurant and a gift shop on site. Photography allowed. If you’re in the area, this delightful historic property is well worth a visit.
