What a delightful evening it was at Birmingham Rep (seeing Withnail and I). The fabulous brutalist building and modernist interior has been beautifully cared for and as I sank into my buttery soft leather seat in the auditorium the stress of a late train from London & the subsequent breathless bolt up the hill left my body entirely.
The staff were exceptional too – especially the lovely lady at the cloakroom and the gorgeous Mo, who was so helpful, observant and kind I asked for his name so I could give him special mention.
I’ll be coming back for sure!

Interesting 1960’s throwback celebration of the film Withnail & I. Lead Adonis Siddique did a good impersonation of Richard E Grant, the sets were brilliant with an old Jag and Telephone Box centre stage. Too much use of swear words for my liking! The music was excellent, the band should release a show album!

Wonderful modern theatre. Good size & great view wherever you are seated as it isn’t too enormous.
I wish they had put water jugs out though as I was super thirsty & the queues for the bars were too long!!!

I recently watched The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at The Rep and it was a truly wonderful experience. The curved tiered seating in ‘The House’ auditorium allows for great visibility of the stage, we were on row H. They also have smaller auditoriums such as ‘The Door’ for smaller scale performances.

I will cover both the show and the theatre itself in this review.

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

Incredibly underwhelming, unimaginative and gravely disappointing on numerous levels.

The artistic interpretation of the movie and subsequent translation onto the stage has a lot to be desired and fails across the board.

The costumes are absolutely dire, in particular “the beavers”; who look like they were on a tight budget for a fancy dress party.
    Scenery is non existent.

I could not buy into the Pevensie “children” who are all clearly adults; the mannerisms don’t match visually therefore makes odd viewing.

Deviations from the original plot were unnecessary and started to infuse scenes reminiscent of pantomime. Key scenes at that! Such as Lucy “finding the wardrobe”; is now replaced by a cat with its ever so hilarious “meow” that guides her there. How. Amazing.

And Narnia; itself, I was expecting a truly wonderful, magical transition into this world. It’s not.

    One of the whi...
